SO2Cl2 (Sulfuryl chloride) Lewis Structure

Sulfuryl chloride (SO2Cl2) contains one sulfur atom, two chlorine atoms and two oxygen atoms. In SO2Cl2 lewis structure, there are two double bonds between sulfur atom and oxygen atoms. Between sulfur and chlorine atoms, there are single bonds. No lone pairs exist on sulfur atom.

Lewis structure of SO2Cl2

SO2Cl2 lewis structure

Sulfur atom is the center atom and chlorine and oxygen atoms exist around the sulfur atom. There are six bonds around sulfur atom. Therefore, there are twelve electrons in valence shell of sulfur atom and that is another example to show sulfur can keep more than eight electrons in it's valence shell.

Steps of drawing lewis structure of SO2Cl2

Following steps are used to draw the lewis structure of SO2Cl2. Each step is explained in detail in next sections. If you are a beginner to lewis structure drawing, follow these sections slowly and properly to understand it completely. Look the figures to understand each step.

  1. Find total number of electrons of the valance shells of sulfur, chlorine and oxygen atoms
  2. Total electrons pairs
  3. Center atom selection
  4. Put lone pairs on atoms
  5. Check the stability and minimize charges on atoms by converting lone pairs to bonds until most stable structure is obtained.
